Derek Peterson, the president of Peterson Cartridge, explains that the decision to develop the tooling required for .22 Creedmoor brass was motivated by an increase in long-distance predator and varmint hunting, as well as the enjoyment derived from shooting the round due to its low-recoil, flat shooting, wind-bucking, and impressive accuracy of up to 800 yards. While also producing 6.5 and 6mm Creedmoor casings, Peterson Cartridge set out to manufacture .22 Creedmoor casings with increased head hardness to withstand higher pressures, and a slightly larger internal volume to complement the slow burning powders (such as RL 26, or H1000) that are favored for this round. Prior to this development, shooters had to use 6mm or 6.5 Creedmoor casings and neck them down to .22, which resulted in problems with excess brass gathering in the neck, which had negative effects on loading, bullet release, and accuracy. Additionally, necking down caused the properly annealed brass casing to become work-hardened, and produced neck walls too thick for the ideal size. However, Peterson's .22 Creedmoors fall within the required thickness. Peterson worked with Derrick Ratliff of Horizon Firearms to design the casing, as Horizon has been integrating .22 Creedmoor guns since 2014 and contributed to moving the .22 Creedmoor from an unknown wildcat to the popular caliber it is today.
