RCBS Steel Neck Bushings are essential for achieving the right amount of tension on your bullet when using RCBS Gold Medal Match sizing dies. These bushings are interchangeable, allowing you to select the perfect one for your needs. By using a perfectly-fitted Steel Neck Bushing, you'll reduce work hardening of the case neck brass, which will prolong case life and improve accuracy.
These bushings are self-centering for proper alignment with case neck, but it's recommended to use high-quality brass with consistent neck thicknesses for optimal results. The bushings come "in-the-white," meaning they're bare steel, so traditional case lubrication is needed. Keep in mind that these bushings are ONLY meant to be used with RCBS Gold Medal sizing dies.
RCBS recommends having neck bushings one to two sizes above and below your target diameter. It's vital to note that there are two ways to select the steel neck bushings you need. You can measure the outside neck diameter of your loaded cartridge and subtract .002" to .003" to get approximately .001" of brass to spring back for correct neck tension. Alternatively, you may measure the neck wall thickness of your case, multiply that figure by two, add the diameter of your bullet, and then subtract .002" to .003".
In summary, RCBS Steel Neck Bushings may seem like a small component, but they are critical to loading extremely consistent-shooting ammo with your Gold Medal Match sizing dies. Remember to follow the manufacturer's guidelines when selecting the right size for your needs.
