The use of a properly fitted Steel Neck Bushing can reduce work hardening of the case neck brass, increase case lifespan, and contribute to better accuracy. These bushings are self-centering for proper alignment with the case neck, but RCBS recommends using high-end brass with consistent neck thicknesses for best results. The bushings come in bare steel, so traditional case lubrication is necessary when using them. Additionally, they should only be used with RCBS Gold Medal sizing dies. RCBS suggests having neck bushings that are one to two sizes above and below your target diameter for optimal performance. Brownells Gun Tech™ Tip recommends two ways to choose the proper steel neck bushings: (1) measuring the outside neck diameter of the loaded cartridge and subtracting .002/.003 to allow for .001" of brass spring back or (2) measuring the neck wall thickness of the case, multiplying by two, adding the bullet diameter, and then subtracting .002/.003.
